Soil plays an invaluable role in nature. It provides space for plants to grow, stores water, filters pollutants, and supports countless biological processes. It is the foundation of our food security, the key to a stable water cycle, and a natural barrier protecting ecosystems from degradation. However, we don’t always remember this.

33 years ago – on May 22, 1992, the Convention on Biological Diversity was held. Eight years later, in December 2000, the UN General Assembly commemorated this event by declaring May 22 as the International Day of Biological Diversity. This holiday aims to increase public awareness of biological diversity and its importance for socio-economic development. In 2025, the motto will be “Harmony with nature and sustainable development.”
World Wetlands Day, celebrated annually on the 2nd of February, was established in 1997 by the Ramsar Convention Secretariat. This year’s theme is “Protecting Wetlands for Our Common Future.”
The Convention on Wetlands of International Importance especially as Waterfowl Habitat, also known as the Ramsar Convention, was signed in Ramsar on February 2 1971. To date, 172 countries have become its members, designating 2,503 wetlands of of international importance.
