The public consultations on the ‘Stop Drought!’ project are underway. Meetings have already been held in Poznań, Zielona Góra, Wrocław, Gliwice, Lublin, Rzeszów, Kraków, Szczecin, Koszalin, Gdańsk and Bydgoszcz. In the near future, representatives of SWH Polish Waters and experts working on developing the first Polish Drought Effects Counteracting Plan will visit Białystok and Olsztyn. Unsurprisingly, residents, local government representatives and the media are still very much interested in participating in these meetings.
From 5 November until mid-December, public consultation meetings on the DECP project will be held in the Kłodzko Valley region.
The primary focus of the meetings will be flood control activities as well as plans and investment projects related to them. These projects concern the Nysa Kłodzka River and its tributaries. Since the Kłodzko region is particularly vulnerable to flooding, SWH Polish Waters is developing a multi-stage flood control strategy to counteract the effects. Its main goal is to protect the life and property of the Kłodzko Valley inhabitants. The solutions presented during the consultation meetings will include modernising the existing hydro-technical facilities as well as constructing new ones. Such investments are planned to be implemented in highly-urbanised areas, where a potential flood would cause the most severe losses. At present, four polders are being constructed in the Kłodzko Valley. Polders are empty reservoirs which help contain flood waters, thus preventing nearby towns from being flooded. The purpose of the activities conducted by Polish Waters is to increase the safety of the region inhabitants by protecting them from flood-related hazards. It must be noted that the Kłodzko Valley region was severely impacted by the catastrophic floods in 1997, with many towns being devastated and about 20 people losing their lives. In the near future, SWH Polish Waters wants to provide the Kłodzko region with effective flood control measures while taking actions to prevent drought at the same time. The next stages include creating multifunctional projects aimed at minimising the impact of both of these extreme phenomena.
