DROUGHT? FLOOD? RETENTION

By publishing the video “Stop suszy” (Stop the Drought), we intend to initiate a public discussion about drought in Poland. We have scrutinised the phenomenon with the help of the research conducted for the purposes of the “Stop the Drought!” programme. The video, owing its title to the programme itself, aims to draw attention to the growing problem.

During today’s (July 25th) press briefing at the Vistula River, Marek Gróbarczyk, Minister of Maritime Economy and Inland Navigation has recalled that the current low water levels and periodic floods have resulted from long-term negligences in the Polish water management.

LOW LEVELS OF WATER IN RIVERS. RETENTION AS A RESPONSE TO THE DROUGHT

On 24 July, the Warsaw-Boulevards water gauge showed that the level of Vistula was only 41 cm. On most of Polish rivers, the low levels of water are observed. What is the reason for this situation? The lack of snow cover in winter, low rainfall and high temperatures, i.e. the drought. The Polish Waters work intensively to prevent its effects.
